We’re excited to announce that Canvas Day is coming!  Join your colleagues on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the Regenstein Library. Planning for the day includes presentations by instructors who have used Canvas in their classrooms in innovative ways and discussions on how Canvas can enhance classroom teaching. Mark your calendar and check back here for further details.

Why attend?

This half-day conference will highlight presentations by several faculty showcasing their success stories in leveraging Canvas in their teaching and learning. You will have the opportunity to network, engage in consultations, earn chances to win door prizes, and learn more about Canvas. The event will start with a light lunch and end with a reception, including optional tours of the TechBar and the first One Button Studio for video production at UChicago.

Considering Innovation in Teaching and Learning

Scott Stern, Professor of Medicine and former Assistant Dean for Technology & Innovation in Medical Education for the Pritzker School of Medicine, shares his thoughts on why instructors should think more about how to innovate their pedagogy with the growth of available supporting technologies.

Student Panel: Their User Experience

UChicago students share their Canvas experiences and expectations moving forward on this platform. This discussion will include their thoughts as they relate to a recent Canvas user survey of students and instructors conducted during winter quarter 2018 by the Academic Technology Solutions group in IT Services.

Using Video Outside the Classroom

Faculty in this presentation will share how they are creating and leveraging video content for student learning outside the classroom, both in a flipped classroom model and in an adaptive release format for building understanding, and how that change in content delivery has affected what they do in the classroom.

Encouraging Creativity, Collaboration and Engagement with Class Blogs

In this panel session, faculty share how they have effectively integrated blogging and active discussions in a variety of ways that have increased student engagement with course content, their instructors, and other students.

Deepen Student Engagement in the Classroom with Instant Polling

Advances in student response systems, or ‘instant polling’ technology, are allowing instructors opportunities to increase the feedback from entire classes quickly. In this presentation, hear how a couple of UChicago instructors are leveraging this instant information to enhance their classroom teaching and learning practices.

The end-of-day activities includes refreshments, tours of the TechBar, and an exciting preview tour of the first One Button Studio for video production at UChicago! Tours begin by the registration table outside of Room 122.

Canvas Day will be held at the Joseph Regenstein Library, located at 1100 E. 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637. Registration, lunch, coffee, info tables, faculty presentations, and end of day reception will be in room 122, just to the left of the main doors facing 57th Street. Canvas technical sessions, consultation, tours will be in the TechBar Studio located on the first floor, to the right of the main staircase, behind the TechBar walk-up desk.
